The "Buschenschank"

 

There is an old saying passed down ….: „The wine tastes best where it grows.“

Viniculturehas been going on formore than 2000 years, and it was quite normal that the wine growers were permitted to offer their wines within their own taverns. In 1784, Kaiser Josef II (1741-1790) passed a law giving the legal base called the „Josefinische Zirkularverordnung”. By this sanction he allowed farmers to sell their own produce on their premises.

One of these places and amongst the best known is the Polz-Buschenschank, which is part of the Erich and Walter Polz winery, Their quality wines can be tasted and enjoyed right in the middle of the vineyards of the South Styrian “Hügelland”.

The owners and hosts, Johanna and Wolfgang Kohlenberger provide a homely and appealing atmosphere while caring for their guests, who are the centre of attention.

The inviting Polz-Buschenschank offers room for 40 guests in the Stube as well as 60 guests in the sitting garden and on the veranda. For the little guests there is a playground and in the house-library many fascinating books are available.

Home cooking at its best

The “Brettljause”, coming from the traditional farmer’s lunch, is not to be missed in a Styrian Buschenschank. Not only a great selection of tasty cold foods, but also a rich variety of delicious, in house created recipes makes the menu a culinary highlight.

The delights by Polz-Buschenschank’s cuisine are of superb taste and you can be sure of enjoying food from exclusively home or local produce. Herbs from our own country garden add the final touches to our taste creations.
How to get there

Spielfeld, at the border to Slovenia and a town within the ‘Nature Park South Styrian Wine land’ (www.naturpark.at), is the gate to the South Styrian wine route. (‘Südsteirische Weinstraße). Coming from Graz, Spielfeld is reached within half an hour by car taking the A9 Phyrnautobahn into the direction of Slovenia (44 km from Graz to the exit Spielfeld). Parking is available.
